#BTS OF THE DIASPORA AS NIGERIA’S BRAIN GAIN CONFERENCE
What happens when you bring the top Nigerian Diaspora healthcare practitioners in one place? MAGIC! Watch BTS of the 2018 Nigerian Health Watch Conference.
In 2017, Nigeria Health Watch conducted a survey that discovered that almost 9 in 10 doctors were seeking opportunities abroad, with 100% of the respondents were aware of a Nigerian doctor seeking work opportunities abroad.
With this insight regarding the brain drain, it’s remarkable that they refused to fall into despair but instead saw the silver lining of all of it; then came up with a genius idea! – Deciding to make their annual conference about the diaspora and the brain gain gotten from them.
I will be honest, when I first saw it I was taken back and wondered if there weren’t more pressing matters but the more I pondered on it, it became clear to me why it was an important vision and conversation.
Because, we all know the truth in Nigeria; we know that we need to do more in the healthcare centers, we need more doctors and our hospitals are failing but in the words of Dr. Anya we are not where we should be but we are also not where we used to be a decade ago.
So what’s happened in the last decade? A WHOLE LOT but of course the conference will be putting the spotlight on the healthcare professionals in the diaspora that have brought their skills, experiences, and resources back to help improve the health sector.
